Maezono | Character Overview

Updated: Jul 31

Maezono, a girl in Horikita's class. (first name is unknown)

She is a student who was dating Hashimoto, a traitor in Sakayanagi's class, and was expelled from the school in Volume 12 of the second year edition.

What Kind of Person is Maezono? Her Appearances So Far

During the shipboard exam, Maezono was paired with Sakura. Given that pairing, it might be that Kinugasa-sensei intended for Maezono to eventually get expelled. If that's the case, it's quite terrifying lol.

Maezono participated in the relay race during the sports festival, passing the baton from Onodera to Kushida, which suggests she's fast.

In the midst of Ichinose's shoplifting scandal, it was revealed that Maezono disliked Onodera.

Ayanokoji had spoken with Maezono and found her attitude unpleasant.

She has recently started to stand out in volume 9.5 of the second-year series.

The reason for her increased presence is her relationship with Masayoshi Hashimoto from Sakayanagi's class, who has influenced her significantly.

Highlights of Maezono's Actions

Volume 9.5: Holding a Meeting About Ayanokoji

Maezono's most notable appearance is in volume 9.5 of the second-year series. On December 26, she gathers Ike, Sudou, Shinohara, Matsushita, Mori, Wang, and Onodera under the pretext of discussing the future of the class. However, the real topic is about Ayanokoji.

Maezono expresses:

  • She finds Ayanokoji gloomy and uncomfortable.

  • She suspects that Ayanokoji's true abilities differ from what the OAA indicates and that he might have been holding back.

  • She wonders if Ayanokoji is secretly working behind Horikita.

  • She fears that, since Ayanokoji caused Sakura's expulsion, he might expel other classmates too.

Although, Matsushita suggests involving Horikita, the class leader, the meeting ends without major consequences. However, it spreads unease about Ayanokoji. This conversation is overheard and recorded by Hashimoto, which was a complete betrayal of the class.

Volume 10: Voicing Discontent Against Horikita

In volume 10 of the second-year series, during a special trivia quiz test to decide the class leader, Maezono expresses dissatisfaction with Horikita, who was almost unanimously decided to be the leader.

She questions whether Horikita truly is the best candidate, citing Horikita's indecisiveness during the unanimous decision test, thus spreading anxiety within the class. While questioning Horikita's leadership is not inherently bad, if it was influenced by Hashimoto to spread doubt among the class, Maezono was being used manipulatively.

Maezono's suspicious behavior soon became clear when Sakayanagi pointed out that she had seen Maezono and Hashimoto dating. Hashimoto didn't mind being seen since he believed it wasn't a big deal.

Despite receiving information about Horikita's class from Hashimoto, Sakayanagi accused him of ruining her fun.

Thus, it was confirmed that Maezono and Hashimoto were dating, although Hashimoto indicated that it was a strategic move rather than a genuine relationship.

Volume 12: Leading to Maezono's Expulsion

In this volume, Ayanokoji learns from Yamamura (Sakayanagi's class) and Matsushita (Horikita's class) that Maezono orchestrated the "Talking About Ayanokoji Meeting".

During the end-of-year test, similar to a werewolf game, Ayanokoji proposes to Ichinose, an opponent, to expel a traitor from their respective classes. Ichinose designates Maezono as the traitor from her class.

Ayanokoji claims Maezono is the traitor, leading to her expulsion. This decision was convenient for Ayanokouji as Maezono had leaked information about his participation in the test to Hashimoto, who in turn informed Kanzaki, the opponent.

Despite Maezono's betrayal, there was a chance she could reform. However, Ayanokoji chose her expulsion as a convenient outcome, using Maezono as a tool for his strategy.

Comparison with Yamauchi

Maezono’s case mirrors Yamauchi's situation.During the conversation where Maezono was identified as the traitor, he could have avoided expulsion by denying it.

The rule was that as long as the traitor wasn't identified by the representative, they wouldn’t be expelled. However, Maezono acted out of self-interest and engaged in spying, leading to an outcome similar to Yamauchi's.

The sad part is that Maezono was manipulated by Hashimoto, who had no romantic interest in her but used her for spying.

If it weren't for Hashimoto, Maezono might not have been expelled. But ultimately, Maezono’s decision to spy led to her expulsion.

Conclusion

In this case, Ayanokoji caused a second expulsion.

Previously, he had orchestrated Sakura Airi's unanimous decision to expel her due to her poor grades.

This time, he directly facilitated Maezono's expulsion.

This may anger Hirata, as Ayanokoji was incredibly cold and left no room for Maezono to be saved.
